This lot comes in at 1,847m from Kiaguthu Washing Station in Othaya — was built in 1964 on the land between the Rwarai and Chinga rivers, high enough that the fields around it begin trading coffee for tea. There’s no estate here. Kenyan coffee is smallholder coffee: farmers working plots often smaller than a hectare, picking ripe cherry by hand and carrying it to the factory the same day.

What happens at the factory is most of what makes a Kenyan cup taste Kenyan. Cherry is pulped within hours of arriving, fermented twice to strip every trace of mucilage, washed down grading channels that sort the parchment by density, then laid on raised beds to dry slowly over one to two weeks. The water comes off Mount Kenya and the Aberdares. Later, at the dry mill, the parchment is hulled and graded by screen size — this lot is 17/18, Kenya’s AA, the top size grade. The varieties carry their own history: SL28 and SL34 have been the backbone of Kenyan coffee for decades, prized for the deep, structured acidity that made the country’s reputation.

Kiaguthu is one of seventeen washing stations run by the Othaya Farmers Cooperative Society, operating since the 1960s and representing around 11,000 farming families. Beyond milling and marketing its members’ coffee, the society puts proceeds back into the area — building bridges, running medical screenings, the kind of work a region of smallholders can only fund together.

Where the name comes from

Mount Kenya stands 5,199 meters over these farms — the second-highest mountain in Africa, and close enough that you reach Nyeri by climbing its southwestern slopes. The Kikuyu who farm this land call it Kĩrĩnyaga, written in full as Kirima Kĩrĩ Nyaga: “the mountain with the ostrich.” The name describes what you see from the valley floor — dark rock crowned in white, like the plumage of a cock ostrich. Those white patches are glaciers, eleven of them, holding on almost exactly at the equator. The mountain is also where Ngai dwells, and Kikuyu homes were traditionally built with their doors facing it.

Its highest point is Batian, named for Mbatian, a Maasai laibon — a spiritual leader — whose brother and sons gave their names to the peaks beside it. We paired that summit with Kirima, the word for mountain in the language spoken on these farms.

There’s one more turn to the story. In 2010, Kenya’s Coffee Research Institute released a new variety and named it after that same peak. Batian is in this bag, alongside SL28 and SL34 — two of the varieties in its own parentage. A variety and its ancestors, grown within sight of the mountain all three were named for.
